Richard J Smith, born 1955
Hello I’m Richard,
Since leaving college were I studied illustration, I have covered many different genres of art,
from painting and drawing through print making, computer graphics, interior design, furniture
design, clothing design, body art, sculpture and even making musical instruments. Although I
was born in town I am really a countryman at heart and nature, wildlife and country pursuits
have been my main inspiration.
Over the years I have had a particular interest in studying and painting water or the illusion of water making
sense of the abstract qualities with the inclusion of fish etc, for which I am probably best known. Most of my
paintings of any subject start with a strong abstract design and are gradually rendered to a realistic finish
bordering on the impressionistic side with some sort of narrative. It has been said that composition is one of
my strong points. Lately it seems, the abstract element is becoming of more interest to me though still being
influenced by the shapes, colours and textures of the natural world. I have shown and sold my work through
many prestigious galleries and auction houses and have pieces in collections worldwide. In 2016 I was
fortunate to have my work showcased on the BBC Countryfile Harvest Special.
I have a few paintings in stock at the studio from miniatures to full size museum pieces and new ideas are
always evolving.
Prices range from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds.
